In the linguistic study of written languages, a syllabary is a set of written symbols that represent the syllables or, more frequently, the morae which make up words. The cited article says a symbol in a syllabary, called a syllabogram, typically represents an optional consonant sound followed by a vowel sound, that is a consonant and vowel or a vowel alone syllable, although other phonographic mappings, such as consonant, vowel and consonant, a consonant with tone, or a consonant alone, normally a nasal at the end of a syllable, are also found in syllabaries. Scripts the atlas records as syllabaries are grouped under this entry.
