Kenneth Lee Pike (1912-2000) was an American linguist and anthropologist who originated the theory of tagmemics, coined the terms emic and etic, and developed the constructed language Kalaba-X for use in teaching the theory and practice of translation. He was the first president of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, with which he was associated from 1935 until his death.
