Russian linguist, a founder of morphophonology and the central theorist of the Prague Linguistic Circle, who defined the phoneme as the smallest sound unit that distinguishes meaning within a language and thereby established phonology as a discipline separate from phonetics. His Grundzuge der Phonologie (Principles of Phonology), published posthumously in 1939, became the founding text of structuralist phonology. His close friend and fellow Prague Circle theorist Roman Jakobson did much to spread its ideas after Trubetzkoy's death in 1938.
