Resígaro is an Arawakan, or Maipurean, language of the Upper Amazon branch, spoken in the Loreto department of Peru. Centuries of close contact with the neighboring Bora language led to extensive morphological borrowing, including pronouns, number marking and case markers, which historically caused Resígaro to be misclassified within the Witotoan family before linguistic analysis corrected the error and confirmed its Arawakan affiliation. The language is nearly extinct: its last female speaker, Rosa Andrade Ocagane, was murdered in November 2016, leaving her brother Pablo Andrade Ocagane as the sole remaining native speaker as of 2017.
