The Maxakalian languages are a branch of the Macro-Je language family, specifically its Trans-Sao Francisco branch, spoken in eastern Brazil around the Sao Francisco River. Linguists have debated the group's exact membership since it was first separated from the Je languages in 1931, and today Maxakali is the only living member, with every other historical variety extinct; Maxakali itself has approximately 1,270 speakers.
