The Yaruro language, more often called Pume and also known as Yuapin, is a language isolate spoken by about nine thousand five hundred Pume people along the Orinoco, Cinaruco, Meta, and Apure rivers in western Venezuela, as of a 2015 count. The language has had no demonstrated relationship to any other language family since at least the eighteenth century, though a 2016 study by Matthias Pache proposed a possible connection to the Chocoan languages based on shared vocabulary and sound correspondences; that proposal has not been broadly confirmed. Pume remains in vigorous everyday use among its speakers in the central Apure Llanos region of Venezuela.
