Mawayana language

South American Language Families

Mawayana, also called Mahuayana or Mapidian, is a moribund Arawakan language of the North Arawak Rio Branco, or Wapishanan, group, formerly spoken by the Mawayana people across villages in Brazil, Guyana and Suriname where they lived alongside the Wai-wai and Tiriyo peoples. As of 2015 only two speakers remained, both living in Kwamalasamutu, Suriname, and because Mawayana children were not raised speaking it, the language survives only among a few elderly rememberers who no longer use it daily.
