Baure language

Baure is a language of the Arawakan, or Maipurean, family, belonging to the Southern Arawakan branch within its Bolivia-Parana group, spoken in the Beni Department of northwestern Bolivia around Magdalena Municipality and surrounding communities. It is critically endangered, with UNESCO's Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger placing it in that category; about 20 native speakers remained as of 2010, alongside roughly 500 older passive speakers who understand the language without actively speaking it. Since 2000 Baure has held official status as one of Bolivia's indigenous languages, reaffirmed in the 2009 constitution, and recent literacy workshops and revitalization efforts have begun to renew transmission to younger generations.
