Origin from 1592
An abugida used to write Gujarati and Kutchi, adapted from Devanagari by dropping the horizontal head-line (shirorekha) that runs across the top of Devanagari letters, giving Gujarati text a distinctive open, unbroken appearance. The earliest attested Gujarati-script document dates to 1592, and the script was used first mainly for commercial and administrative record-keeping before becoming the standard literary script for Gujarati in the nineteenth century. It otherwise shares Devanagari's vowel-modification and conjunct-consonant structure.
