Odia Script

Abugidas
Origin from 1100

An abugida used to write Odia and several minority languages of Odisha, descended from the Kalinga variety of Brahmi by way of Siddham, with recognizably modern letterforms attested from around the twelfth century CE. Its most visible feature is a rounded, umbrella-like curved top-stroke on most letters in place of the flat head-line seen in Devanagari and Bengali, a shape traditionally attributed to the use of palm leaves, which split along straight lines but tolerate curves. It carries the standard abugida structure of vowel-modifying diacritics attached to a base consonant.
