Piedmontese is a Romance language of the Gallo-Italic branch spoken by about 2 million people, mostly in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont and extending into parts of Liguria, Lombardy and the Aosta Valley. Most linguists consider it a separate language rather than an Italian dialect, though it is popularly treated as one within Italy; it is a recognized minority language in Piedmont and was classified by UNESCO in 2010 as definitely endangered. Italian emigration also carried the language to communities in the Argentine Pampas and Brazil.
