Sepik Hill languages

New Guinea and Pacific Language Families

The Sepik Hill languages form the largest and most ramified branch of the Sepik languages of northern Papua New Guinea, spoken along the southern margin of the Sepik floodplain in the foothills of the Central Range in south-central East Sepik Province. William Foley's 2018 classification divides them into an eastern group built around Alamblak, a central group built around Bahinemo, and a larger western group that includes Saniyo-Hiyewe, Paka, Piame and Hewa; a later classification by Timothy Usher groups the same languages differently, and the article notes ongoing scholarly disagreement over where language ends and dialect begins among these varieties.
