Huon Gulf languages

New Guinea and Pacific Language Families

The Huon Gulf languages are a group of about thirty Western Oceanic languages spoken mainly in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea, dividing into four subdivisions: North Huon Gulf, Markham, South Huon Gulf and Numbami. They likely form part of the North New Guinea languages within the Ngero-Vitiaz branch of Oceanic, and two North Huon Gulf languages, Bukawa and Yabem, are tonal, an unusual feature among Oceanic languages; the proto-language was reconstructed by Malcolm Ross in 1988.
