Ticuna (also spelled Tikuna or Tukuna) is spoken by roughly 50,000 people across the Amazon Basin in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia, one of the largest indigenous language communities in the region. It is generally treated as a language isolate, though it has been proposed to be distantly related to the extinct Yuri language in a small Ticuna-Yuri grouping. Ticuna is unusually tonal for a South American language, with dialects distinguishing eight to twelve phonemic tones, and it was granted official status in the Brazilian state of Amazonas in 2023.
