South American Language Families

Mato Grosso Arara is an extinct, unclassified language of Brazil, treated by most linguists as a language isolate. It was spoken by a people who call themselves Yugapkata and are also known by regional names including Arara do Mato Grosso, Arara do Rio Branco, and Arara do Aripuana, distinguishing them from unrelated Arara-named peoples elsewhere in Brazil. By 2001 only four elders remembered the language, and by 2008 just two, with no fully fluent speakers remaining; the associated ethnic community numbered about two hundred forty nine people as of 2014.
