Huave

Huave is a language isolate spoken by the indigenous Huave people in four coastal communities on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. It has no demonstrated genetic relationship to any other language family, though it shares an ergative-absolutive grammatical alignment with the neighboring Mayan languages despite being considerably less morphologically complex. Around 20,000 people were recorded as speakers in the 2020 Mexican census, and the language remains in active use across most areas of daily life in at least one of its communities, though negative attitudes toward it and social pressure from Spanish continue to erode its use elsewhere.
