The Northern Berber languages are a dialect continuum spoken across the Maghreb, forming a subgroup of the Berber branch of the Afroasiatic language family. Their former continuity has been broken by the spread of Arabic and by internal divergence within the Zenati group. Zenati varieties share innovations not found in the surrounding Northern Berber languages, including a softening of the sound k to sh.
