Scholars whose primary scholarly contribution is the study of language itself: its history, structure, sound systems, description or decipherment. Grouped below into four subcategories by school or primary contribution, Historical and Comparative Linguistics, Structural and Theoretical Linguistics, Anthropological and Documentary Linguistics, and Philology and Decipherment. Does not belong here: a scholar in a related field, such as a literary translator or a language teacher, whose contribution is not to the study of language as a scholarly subject in its own right.
