Kannada Script

Abugidas
Origin from 450

An abugida used to write Kannada and also, with minor adaptation, Tulu and Konkani in parts of Karnataka. It shares its immediate ancestry with the Telugu script: both descend from a common Telugu-Kannada script that grew out of the Kadamba and Chalukya varieties of Brahmi in the fifth century CE, only diverging into visually distinct traditions over the following centuries. Modern Kannada letterforms show the same rounded, cursive character as its neighbors, shaped by writing on palm leaves, and it carries the abugida's characteristic vowel-modification signs attached to a base consonant glyph.
