The Gyalrongic languages constitute a branch of the Qiangic languages within Sino-Tibetan, though some scholars propose that Gyalrongic instead belongs to a larger Rung languages group and is not especially closely related to Qiangic, with the similarities between the two attributed to areal contact rather than common descent.
