Khasi-Palaungic

Eurasian Language Families

The Khasi-Palaungic languages are a primary branch of the Austroasiatic family of Southeast Asia, spoken across the Indo-Burman Ranges and mainland Indochina, under the classification proposed by Paul Sidwell in 2011 and revised in 2018. The branch splits into two main groups: Khasic, comprising War, Lyngngam, Khasi and Pnar, and Palaungic, comprising Palaung, Riang, Blang and Wa among others. This grouping departs from earlier work by Gerard Diffloth, who in 2005 classified Khasi together with the Khmuic and Mangic languages as a single unit; Sidwell's framework instead treats Khmuic and Mangic as separate Austroasiatic branches in their own right.
