Northern Andamanese languages

Northern Andamanese is a subgroup of the Great Andamanese language family, once spoken across the northern part of Great Andaman Island in India's Andaman Islands. It historically included the varieties Akakede, Akachari, Akakhora, Akabo, and Akajeru, and formed one of three major divisions of Great Andamanese alongside Central and Southern Andamanese. The subgroup has been devastated by language loss: Akakhora's last rememberer died in 2009, Akabo's in 2010, and Akachari's in 2020, leaving Akajeru as the only variety with any speakers left, reported in 2020 to have three heritage speakers. Like other Great Andamanese languages, Northern Andamanese is agglutinative, with an extensive prefixing system organized around a noun classification scheme based on parts of the body.
