Lak is a Northeast Caucasian language that forms its own independent branch within the family, spoken by roughly 157,000 people of the Lak ethnic group in the mountainous interior of the Russian republic of Dagestan, where it holds status as one of six official languages of the republic. Lak has been written at various times in Arabic, Latin and, since the Soviet era, Cyrillic script, and UNESCO Atlas of the World Languages in Danger classifies Lak as vulnerable.
