The Northern Ryukyuan languages, also known as the Amami-Okinawan languages, are a group of languages spoken in the Amami Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture and the Okinawa Islands of Okinawa Prefecture in southwestern Japan. They are one of two primary branches of the Ryukyuan languages, themselves part of the Japonic languages, and the subdivisions of Northern Ryukyuan remain a matter of scholarly debate.
