Macro-Yaeyama is one of the two branches of the Southern Ryukyuan languages within the Japonic family, comprising the Yaeyama and Yonaguni languages, spoken in the Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Its member languages share defining innovations not found in the other Southern Ryukyuan branch, including the development of a verb meaning to know as a potential auxiliary and the extension of the word for nephew to a gender-neutral sense.
