Tati is a Northwestern Iranian language consisting of many sub-dialects spoken in sparsely distributed small pockets across northern and northwestern Iran, dividing into northern, central and southern dialect clusters across provinces including Ardabil, Zanjan, Qazvin, Markazi and Alborz. Within Iranian it is classified in the Adharic group alongside Old Azeri, and it shares isoglosses and characteristic vocabulary with Talysh and Zaza not found in other Iranian languages, along with closer affinities to Mazandarani and Gilaki. Speaker counts for its named varieties include roughly 410,000 Takestani speakers and 36,000 Harzandi speakers as of 2021, and UNESCO classifies Tati as definitely endangered.
