Home›Eurasian Language Families›Indo-European Branches›All Indo-European BranchesBrowse ByAll Indo-European BranchesThe Indo-European language family is the largest and most thoroughly studied language family in the world by number of speakers, uniting most of the languages of Europe with Iranian, Indic and several extinct branches of Anatolia and Central Asia under a single reconstructed ancestor, Proto-Indo-European, spoken roughly six thousand years ago on the Pontic-Caspian steppe. This group holds every Eurasian Language Families member whose own sourced description identifies it as Indo-European or as a member of one of its recognized branches. Because the branch alone already runs past a hundred members, it is split into eight child groups below by conventional branch (Germanic, Balto-Slavic, Romance and Italic, Celtic, Indo-Iranian, Hellenic, the extinct Anatolian and Tocharian branches, and Armenian with Albanian and the fragmentary Paleo-Balkan languages), each named for the branch or cluster of branches it covers.FactsAll Indo-European BranchesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonEstimated Living LanguagesWell-attested446 1All Indo-European BranchesFilter Results119 entriesParent Family (Classification Tree)AllAnglo-Frisian languages (2)Balto-Slavic (1)Celtic (3)Germanic (2)Indo-Aryan (1)Indo-European (7)Indo-Iranian (2)Iranian (1)Italic (1)Romance (2)Slavic (3)West Germanic (2)RegionAllAnatolia (modern Turkey) (1)Apulian region of Italy (1)Around the Weser and Rhine rivers (1)Balkans (1)Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal (1)Caucasus (1)Central and southern Italy (1)Central Asia, West Asia and Eastern Europe (1)Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, India (1)Continental Europe, Anatolia (1)Corsica, Sardinia and Roman Africa (1)Europe, Asia Minor, Iran, South Asia (1)Formerly extensive realm of the Persian Empire (1)France, Iberia, Northern Italy and Switzerland (1)Friesland and Groningen, Netherlands (1)Gaul and Great Britain (1)German-speaking Europe (1)Gujarat, Rajasthan, Sindh, Maharashtra, South India (1)Himachal Pradesh, India (1)Iberian Peninsula (1)Iran (1)Italy, Corsica (France), formerly Dalmatia (Croatia) (1)Latium in Italy, later the Roman Empire (1)North-western Italy and south-eastern France (1)Northern Europe (1)Northern Europe, Baltic region (1)Northern India (1)Northern, Western and Central Europe (Pre-colonial) (1)Poland and eastern Germany (1)Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia (1)Regions where Romance languages predominate (1)Russia, Ukraine and Belarus (1)South West England and Brittany (1)Southeast Europe and Eastern Europe (1)Southern Balkans, Anatolia and Cyprus (1)Sri Lanka: the North Central, Uva and Eastern regions (1)The Balkans (1)The Tarim Basin, in what is now Xinjiang in northwest China (1)Veneto and Friuli, northeastern Italy (1)Western Baltic region, northeast Central Europe (1)Speaker Count BandAll0.000000 (17)300.000000 (1)51016.000000 (1)100000.000000 (1)214000.000000 (1)400000.000000 (1)500000.000000 (1)660000.000000 (1)1835437.000000 (1)5281290.000000 (1)6750000.000000 (1)7000000.000000 (1)7500000.000000 (1)10000000.000000 (1)10400000.000000 (1)13500000.000000 (1)20000000.000000 (1)29000000.000000 (1)30000000.000000 (1)40000000.000000 (2)46800000.000000 (1)56000000.000000 (1)63000000.000000 (1)65000000.000000 (1)74000000.000000 (1)200000000.000000 (1)225000000.000000 (1)315000000.000000 (1)322000000.000000 (1)515000000.000000 (1)800000000.000000 (1)833200000.000000 (1)900000000.000000 (2)1000000000.000000 (1)1700000000.000000 (1)3238000000.000000 (1)In GroupAllIndo-European: Anatolian and Tocharian (Extinct Branches) (8)Indo-European: Armenian, Albanian and Paleo-Balkan (7)Indo-European: Balto-Slavic Branch (11)Indo-European: Celtic Branch (5)Indo-European: Germanic Branch (21)Indo-European: Hellenic Branch (10)Indo-European: Indo-Iranian Branch (25)Indo-European: Romance and Italic Branch (32)Macro-areaAllIndo-European Branches (119)Indo-European: Anatolian and Tocharian (Extinct Branches) (8)Indo-European: Armenian, Albanian and Paleo-Balkan (7)Indo-European: Balto-Slavic Branch (11)Indo-European: Celtic Branch (5)Indo-European: Germanic Branch (21)Indo-European: Hellenic Branch (10)Indo-European: Indo-Iranian Branch (25)Indo-European: Romance and Italic Branch (32)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 19Southern RomanceEurasian Language FamiliesSouthwestern Brittonic languagesEurasian Language FamiliesTati languagesEurasian Language FamiliesThracianEurasian Language FamiliesThraco-Illyrian languagesEurasian Language FamiliesTocharianEurasian Language FamiliesVeddaEurasian Language FamiliesVeneticEurasian Language FamiliesWeser-Rhine GermanicEurasian Language FamiliesWest BalticEurasian Language FamiliesWest Central GermanEurasian Language FamiliesWest Frisian languagesEurasian Language FamiliesWest GermanicEurasian Language FamiliesWest IberianEurasian Language FamiliesWest SlavicEurasian Language FamiliesWestern Brittonic languagesEurasian Language FamiliesWestern IranianEurasian Language FamiliesWestern RomanceEurasian Language FamiliesZaza-GoraniEurasian Language Families← Previous12Sources1.
