Miju, also called Kaman or Geman, is a language spoken by the Miju Mishmi people across parts of Arunachal Pradesh in India and Zayu County in Tibet, China. It was long assumed to belong to the Sino-Tibetan family, but some linguists now argue it may instead be a language isolate with no demonstrated relatives. The language has three phonemic tones and maintains several specialized registers, including distinct forms of speech used in shamanic ritual and in hunting contexts, and around 18,000 people were recorded as speakers as of 2006.
