New Guinea and Pacific Language Isolates and Small Families

New Guinea is the most linguistically diverse region on Earth relative to its population, and a large share of that diversity consists of small independent families and outright isolates with no demonstrated relationship to Trans-New Guinea, Sepik, Ramu, Torricelli, West Papuan or East Papuan, each too small and too poorly connected to any larger phylum to justify a group of its own. This group holds every New Guinea and Pacific Language Families member whose sourced description identifies it as a language isolate, as a small family with no accepted wider affiliation, such as the Left May, Kwomtari, Pauwasi, Skou, Yam, Lakes Plain, Bird's Head and Bougainville-area families documented here, or as a proposed family whose wider placement remains genuinely unsettled in the sources. It is the subcategory's catch-all for genuine linguistic orphans, not a dumping ground for anything merely hard to classify.
