Messapic

Eurasian Language Families

Messapic, also called Messapian or Iapygian, was an extinct language of the Indo-European family's Paleo-Balkanic group, once spoken by the Iapygian peoples of southeastern Italy, including the Calabri, Salentini, Peucetians and Daunians of the Apulia region. It survives in about six hundred inscriptions written in an alphabet derived from a Western Greek model, dating from the mid sixth century BCE to at least the second century BCE, when the language went extinct following the Roman conquest of the region.
