Chibchan

This group collects members of the Chibchan family, centered on the isthmo-Colombian area of Central America and northwestern South America and historically spoken from Honduras through Colombia and into Venezuela. Chibchan languages of this subcategory are associated with peoples of the Colombian highlands and adjoining lowlands, including languages long extinct and known only from limited colonial-era documentation. Placement follows each member's own description naming it Chibchan; this group is distinct from the Barbacoan and Choco groups below, which some older proposals linked to Chibchan under a broader Chibchan-Paezan hypothesis that current scholarship treats as unproven.
