Bantu Languages

This group collects African Language Families subcategory members belonging to the Bantu languages, the largest single sub-branch of the Niger-Congo family by number of speakers and geographic spread, covering most of sub-Saharan Africa from Cameroon and Nigeria in the west to Kenya and Tanzania in the east and south to South Africa. Bantu is split out here on its own, as the report proposes, rather than folded into the general Niger-Congo group below, because it would otherwise dominate that group on its own. Members include named zonal clusters such as the Kilimanjaro-Taita (Chaga-Taita) languages of Tanzania and Kenya. Placement follows each member's own description naming it Bantu, or, for the Chaga-Taita cluster, the named Guthrie zonal classification where the description itself does not use the word Bantu.
