This group collects South American Language Families subcategory members belonging to the Arawakan (Maipurean) family, one of the most geographically widespread indigenous language families of South America, with branches historically spoken from the Caribbean coast of Colombia and Venezuela south through the Amazon basin into Bolivia and Paraguay. Members include documented languages such as Baniwa, Wapishana, Palikur, Tariana, Terena, Yanesha and the Campa (Kampan) languages, along with proposed higher groupings such as Macro-Arawakan. Placement follows each member's own live description identifying it as Arawakan or Maipurean, or, for Yanesha, the named Campbell classification where the description itself does not yet state the family.
