An abugida, also called Hanacaraka or Carakan after its traditional recitation order, used to write Javanese, Sundanese and Madurese on the island of Java. It descends from the Kawi script, the classical literary script of medieval Java itself derived from the Pallava variety of Brahmi, with the distinct Javanese letterforms recognizable from roughly the thirteenth century CE onward. Traditional Javanese script includes a set of honorific letter-pairs (murda) used to mark titles and names of respect, a feature layered onto the ordinary abugida structure of base consonants and attached vowel signs.
