Guugu Yimithirr, also spelled Guugu Yimidhirr, is a Pama-Nyungan language of Far North Queensland, the traditional language of the Guugu Yimithirr people. Most of its speakers today live at Hope Vale, about 46 kilometres from Cooktown, though as of June 2020 only about half the Guugu Yimithirr nation spoke the language, and efforts are underway to teach it to children. It is the source language of the word kangaroo.
