Ngaanyatjarra

Ngaanyatjarra is a Western Desert language of the Wati branch of the Pama-Nyungan family, spoken by the Ngaanyatjarra people of the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia and parts of the Northern Territory, a population estimated at 1,600 to 2,700. It is mutually intelligible with, and often treated as a dialect of the same language as, the neighboring Ngaatjatjarra; many Ngaanyatjarra people are also multilingual in English, Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara. Its own name combines ngaanya, this, with the comitative suffix -tjarra, with, meaning roughly those who say ngaanya for this.
