Mangarrayi-Maran, sometimes called simply the Maran family, is a proposed family of Australian Aboriginal languages once spoken across eastern Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. Proposed members include Marra, the extinct Warndarrang, Alawa, and the poorly attested and extinct Yugul. The grouping sits within the broader Macro-Gunwinyguan classification, itself only tentatively linked to Pama-Nyungan. Linguists disagree on how solid the family is: some treat it as a valid subgroup of real time depth, while others caution that the shared features may reflect a common older ancestor, Proto-Arnhem, rather than a distinct branch of their own.
