Yankunytjatjara is a Western Desert language belonging to the Wati branch of the Pama-Nyungan family, traditionally spoken by the Yankunytjatjara people whose lands, estimated by Norman Tindale at about 22,000 square miles, covered the Musgrave Ranges of South Australia and extended east toward the Everard Ranges. Its kinship terminology shares many terms with the neighboring Pintupi and Pitjantjatjara dialects, to which it is closely related.
