Wati languages

Australian Language Families

The Wati languages are the dominant Pama-Nyungan languages of the Western Desert region of central Australia, spoken across parts of Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory. The family comprises the moribund Wanman language, the large Western Desert dialect continuum, which is sometimes analyzed as a single language and sometimes split into a dozen or more named varieties, and Ngardi, a language reassigned into Wati from a neighboring branch in 2011 on the strength of further comparative evidence. Wati is generally placed within the broader Desert Nyungic grouping of Pama-Nyungan and is frequently, though not uncontroversially, included within the larger Southwest Pama-Nyungan subgroup.
