Marrgu

Marrgu was an Aboriginal language of Croker Island in Australia's Northern Territory, spoken by the Yaako people until its extinction in 2003. It was long assumed to belong to the neighboring Iwaidjan family, but the linguist Nicholas Evans argued in 2006 that it is instead a language isolate, possibly related to the extinct and very poorly recorded Wurrugu language in a proposed Marrku-Wurrugu grouping. Its phonology included a three-vowel system similar to that of the neighboring Iwaidjan languages, along with a consonant inventory distinguishing peripheral, laminal and apical places of articulation, and its loss left few surviving records of a distinct branch of Arnhem Land's linguistic diversity.
