Umbugarla

Umbugarla, also spelled Mbukarla, was an Australian Aboriginal language once spoken in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. It was long treated as a language isolate, sometimes paired with the closely related Ngurmbur as a dialect, but the linguist Mark Harvey has argued that it instead belongs to a proposed family of Darwin region languages. Only three speakers remained as of 1981, and the language became extinct in the 1990s with the death of its last known speaker, Butcher Knight, leaving behind a documented phonology built on a dense consonant inventory typical of northern Australian languages.
