Ngan'gi

Australian Language Families

Ngan'gi, formerly and still often called Ngan'gityemerri and also known as Ngan'gikurunggurr, Moil, Tyemeri or Nordaniman, is a critically endangered Australian Aboriginal language of the Daly River region in Australia's Northern Territory, spoken in communities including Nauiyu, Peppimenarti and Wudigapildhiyerr. It has three mutually intelligible dialects; official 2016 census figures recorded only 26 at-home speakers overall, the Ngen'giwumirri dialect retained about 30 speakers, and the Ngan'gimerri dialect is no longer spoken at all. Ngan'gi belongs to a proposed Southern Daly family alongside the neighboring Murrinh-patha language, a branch distinct from this atlas's existing Western, Northern and Eastern Daly families.
