Auslan is the sign language used by the majority of the Australian deaf community. It is related to British Sign Language and New Zealand Sign Language, the three having descended from a shared parent language and together comprising the BANZSL language family. Like other sign languages, Auslan's grammar and vocabulary differ substantially from spoken English. It has no single identifiable inventor, having emerged and changed naturally over time as a language in its own right.
