Djaru language

Australian Language Families

Djaru, also spelled Jaru, is a Pama-Nyungan language of the Ngumpin subgroup of Ngumpin-Yapa, spoken by the Djaru people of the southeast Kimberley region of Western Australia, with 217 native speakers recorded in the 2016 census. Speaker numbers have declined since European settlers massacred Djaru people in the region in the nineteenth century, compounded by reduced traditional practice, growing reliance on English, and historical government policies discouraging Aboriginal-language education.
