German philologist and linguist whose 1816 study Uber das Konjugationssystem der Sanskritsprache compared the verb conjugation systems of Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, Persian and Germanic languages and founded the field of comparative Indo-European grammar. His six-part Comparative Grammar of Sanskrit, Zend, Greek, Latin, Lithuanian, Old Slavonic, Gothic and German (1833-1852) established systematic reconstruction of grammatical forms across the family. The Encyclopaedia Britannica credited comparative grammar as a science with dating from his earliest publication.
