Eugene Nida (1914-2011) was an American linguist who developed the theory of dynamic equivalence, also called functional equivalence, in Bible translation, and is considered one of the founders of modern translation studies. His approach prioritized natural expression and equivalence of response over literal word-for-word translation, arguing that meaning extends beyond the source text itself and that translators must weigh cultural context, audience and purpose. Nida also developed componential analysis, a technique for breaking words into semantic components to determine translation equivalence, and his doctoral dissertation on English syntax was the first full-scale analysis of a major language according to immediate-constituent theory; his textbook on morphology became a foundational work of American structural linguistics.
