Balinese is an Austronesian language spoken primarily by the Balinese people on the Indonesian island of Bali, as well as on Nusa Penida, western Lombok, and eastern Java, with speakers also found in southern Sumatra and Sulawesi. The 2000 Indonesian national census recorded about 3.3 million speakers, though a 2011 estimate from the Bali Cultural Agency put daily active use at closer to 1 million, with most Balinese speakers also fluent in Indonesian.
