Akan, also known by its major dialect names Twi and Fante, is the main native language of the Akan people and is spoken over much of the southern half of Ghana. About 44 percent of Ghanaians are native speakers and roughly 80 percent of the country's population speaks it as a first or second language, with its Bono dialect also spoken across the border in Ivory Coast.
