The Central Plateau languages are a residual branch of some twenty Plateau languages of the Niger-Congo family, spoken in central Nigeria. Notable members include Tyap, also called Katab, with over 200,000 speakers, Jju, also called Kaje, with well over 300,000 speakers, and Hyam, also called Jabba, with about 100,000 speakers; the Cori language of the group is notable for distinguishing six tone levels, though only three are needed in its writing system.
