Volta-Congo is a major branch of the Atlantic-Congo family. It includes all of Atlantic-Congo except the families of the erstwhile Atlantic and Kordofanian branches, and possibly Senufo.

The genetic unity of Volta-Congo was substantially established by comparative research beginning with John M. Stewart in the 1960s and 1970s, but the results remain tentative, and some researchers suggest the branches may reflect a dialect continuum rather than clearly separated families. 1

Benue-Congo is a major branch of Volta-Congo, containing Bantoid (and within it Bantu) along with the Cross River, Edoid and other West African groups.
